The 384 well plate has the same external dimensions as a
standard 96 well plate. It comes complete with a lid for
stable stacking and is radiation sterilized. Four
wells occupy the same space as one well in a standard 96
well plate. The 384 well plate is designed to host
bacterial cell growth.
Freezer and work space are optimized.
The maximum volume of each well is 124 µl. Once the plate is arrayed, it may be
replicated and stored in a mechanical freezer. Its standard size makes it ideal
for use with automation. Center to center, each well is 4.5 mm which is a
distance compatible with robotics and manual multi-channel pipettes.

The Omni Tray is basically a one well plate that has the same
footprint as the 96 and 384 well microplates. This standard foot
print facilitates the registration of our MULTI-BLOT™ Replicators to the
Omni Tray providing the ability to make multiple off set spots, blots or
inoculations to the same Omni Tray. Thus it possible to make high
density arrays of up to 1536 colonies per Omni Tray. The Omni Tray
can also hold a membrane for dot blotting bacterial clones when screening
DNA libraries. Its standard size makes it ideal for use with automation in
high volume laboratories. The Omni Tray is compatible with most robotic
systems. The sturdy tray walls permit easy robotic manipulation.
The Omni
Tray can be adapted for automated colony pickers. The rectangular design
makes geometric indexing possible. It is also convenient for manual
plating and screening.

The Omni Tray to the right has been inoculated with E. coli carrying
a gene for red pigment from 16 different 96 well microplates using a
VP 409
MULTI-BLOT™ Replicator
and the high density
COLONY COPIER™ VP
380D.
The agar
in the Omni Tray was inoculated and incubated for 18 hours. 1536
distinct colonies can be seen on the plate.

When
spotting onto membranes inside an Omni Tray, on occasion
some customers experience issues with bowing well bottoms
which can affect pin tool transfers when using a
fixed pin replicator. The VP 413A Omni Tray Flattener was
designed to solve this problem. Placing the VP 413A underneath an Omni Tray
corrects this bowing issuing and ensures proper contact and
consistent pin tool transfers in every tray. We also
recommend placing a sheet of
VP 540D- Lint Free Blotting Media Cut To Fit An Omni Tray
underneath the membrane to further enhance contact and
reduce the chance of digging into the membrane.

Pyrex baking dishes can
also be useful around the lab for culturing bacteria on agar. Many of our
customers who use our Multi-Print system for inoculating membranes with
micro-organisms will transfer and culture these membranes on agar surfaces in
the Pyrex dishes. Because of the much larger surface area, larger
membranes can be accommodated. As a convenience to our customers, we offer these
same dishes sold at many department stores and save you a trip to the mall.
